A digital learning space exploring First Peoples' concepts of deep listening
“It's not just the rivers themselves, it's all the connections. And that's what we're at risk of losing if they can't be put together.”Uncle Larry Walsh
Melbourne Museum tasked us to create an innovative and inspiring education space that connects the Museum’s experiences and stories with digital technologies and 21st century learning.
We designed a flexible solution that integrates a wide range of technologies (VR, iPads, green screen and more); uses wall and floor surfaces as a single 27-meter wide infinity projection space or multiple individual screens; and allows the Museum to easily switch between modes, create new content and publish media. We also created the flagship experience for the space. River Connections is a bespoke, immersive film that submerges students in First Peoples' perspectives of the Australian landscape and its psyche.River Connections was made in collaboration with Museums Victoria and First Peoples elders and artists Larry Walsh, Esther Kirby, Brendan Kennedy and Genevieve Grieves. Each scene, image and sound, as well as the overall structure, was developed through a collaborative process of deep listening sessions and visiting the elders on Country.
